I’m Sarah Romer.
And I know what it’s like to have a big vision and high expectations for growth only to be pummeled by obstacle after obstacle along the way.
In 2015, I bought a distressed salon and spa for $80,000. Yes, a fully built-out, operational salon with over $1 million in annual cash flow. For only $80,000!
I knew the business needed TLC. What I didn’t know was how challenging it would be to turn this mess around.
Stylists were quitting every month–and taking their clients with them. That’s like $100,000 in revenue walking right out the door. I was getting gut-punched every day. And the hits kept coming for over a year.
I was running on fumes and in over my head, but failure wasn’t an option.
I didn’t give up. I recruited a strong team, set goals, tracked progress and made informed decisions based on the numbers. By staying focused on my vision and executing daily, I was able to transform this failing salon into a thriving enterprise, which I sold in 2018 for six times my original investment.
Fast forward four years and the salon continues to thrive with many people from my team still in place–surviving the pandemic thanks in large part to the foundation I laid.
Of the 20 years I’ve spent in the business world employed by Google, Groupon, and PayPal, those three years changed me the most–and they changed the trajectory of my career.
That experience is what inspired me to start Avocado Ventures–to help visionary founders grow sustainably and navigate challenges on the path to achieving their vision.
